One subscription, everything you want to watch, no adverts, cancel whenever you like. It was cheaper and better than what came before, and audiences moved fast because the offer was genuinely good.

Every part of that sentence has now been renegotiated. There are six subscriptions, not one. The catalogue shrinks when licensing deals lapse. The cheap tier has adverts, which is the thing the expensive tier was originally sold as not having.

The arithmetic changed

Subscriber growth was the metric that mattered while it lasted, and it justified spending that never had to make sense on its own. When growth flattened, the metric switched to profit per subscriber, and everything downstream of that switch has been unpleasant for viewers.

Prices went up. Password sharing became enforcement. Finished shows were removed from platforms entirely for tax reasons, which is the detail that should have caused more outrage than it did. A programme that exists, that people worked on for years, can now simply stop being available anywhere.

What comes back

Physical media sales have stopped falling and in some categories have risen. Not to anything like their old volume, and mostly among people buying specific films they care about rather than browsing.

That is a rational response to a catalogue you cannot rely on. If a film can vanish from every service you subscribe to, owning a copy stops looking like nostalgia and starts looking like basic prudence.

The part that is not cyclical

The bundle is reassembling. Services are being sold in packages, at a discount, through providers who also sell you broadband. That is cable. It has taken about fifteen years and a great deal of capital to arrive back at cable.

The good news is that the production boom left behind an enormous amount of genuinely ambitious work that would never have been commissioned under the old economics. That library exists now. The question is whether you will be able to find it in five years, and on current evidence the answer is not obviously yes.

Price rises, shrinking catalogues and the quiet return of the thing streaming was supposed to have replaced.

[18

post-206","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-entertainment
["GET
