A compact camera that sold for pocket money a decade ago now goes for several hundred. The cameras have not improved. The queue at the development lab is three weeks in some cities, which is longer than it ever was when film was the only option.<\/p>\n
The obvious reading is nostalgia, and the obvious reading does not survive contact with the buyers. Most of them are in their twenties. They are not returning to anything. They have no memory of the format to be nostalgic about.<\/p>\n
The constraint is the feature<\/strong><\/p>\n Ask them and the answer is usually about limits. Thirty six frames. No screen. No way to check, delete and retake. You take the photograph and then you find out months later whether it worked.<\/p>\n That is a worse tool by every measurement a specification sheet can hold, and it produces a different relationship to the act. When every frame costs money and cannot be reviewed, people slow down. The photographs are not better. The experience of taking them is different, and the difference is the product.<\/p>\n The supply problem<\/strong><\/p>\n Nobody is manufacturing new consumer film cameras at volume, so the entire market is a fixed pool of aging machines with light seals that perish and electronics nobody makes parts for. Prices rise because supply only shrinks.<\/p>\n Film itself is a different story. Production has actually increased, and several stocks that were discontinued have returned. That is a real signal, because coating film is capital-intensive and no one restarts a line on a fad.<\/p>\n How long it lasts<\/strong><\/p>\n The camera market probably peaks and falls back, because it depends on a finite stock of repairable hardware. The film market may not, because it depends on people who have decided they like a slower process.<\/p>\n It is worth being precise about what is happening. This is not a rejection of digital photography by people who take thousands of digital photographs a week.
